Couples Counseling New London NH

Approach

I offer therapy for couples of every orientation that is informed by Emotionally Focused Therapy, the Bader Pearson Developmental Couples Counseling model and the Gottman Method Therapy model. Each model is evidenced based for couples therapy work, drawing off of attachment theory, differentiation theory, neuroscience and longitudinal research on patterns within couples.

The overall focus of our work will be on improving the connection and security in your relationship. Through targeted interventions, you will grow and develop not only as a couple but also individually.

During couples counseling, we seek to address barriers that may be hindering your relationship satisfaction and how to talk about the tough issues you have been avoiding throughout your marriage:

  • How to manage conflict and stay calm in an argument

  • How to strengthen friendship and admiration

  • How to become a team player so that you and your partner can feel supported in the process

  • How to rekindle passion and have the sexual relationship you want

  • How to express your deepest desires, dreams and fears and let your partner know you in a much more intimate way

  • How to become your best self and the best partner you can be

  • How to stay true to yourself while deepening your connection to your partner

Assessment Process

Therapy starts with a three-part assessment of the relationship including filling out questionnaires that are designed to provide an in-depth and scientific evaluation of a couple’s strengths and challenges.

  • These assessments allow me to tailor therapy to the specific needs of the couple and to provide personalized feedback.

  • During the first session (both partners present) we discuss what it is like to be in the relationship currently, how the relationship has evolved over time, and what the couple hopes to get out of therapy.

  • Additionally, I also meet with each partner in the couple for an individual session to discuss his or her individual goals/hopes for therapy and gather more information about his or her family history and background.

  • Lastly, during the third assessment session (both partners present) I give personalized feedback to the couple about the strengths and challenge areas based on the information gathered from the initial session, speaking to each partner individually about the assessment questionnaire results. This is a very personalized and collaborative process. Together, we develop a plan on how to move forward and discuss whether my approach will work for you.
